Clint Eastwood went from the poncho-wearing hero of the spaghetti westerns to Dirty Harry and Play Misty For Me, amongst many other films, but his biggest hit was when he co-starred with an orangutan called Clyde in the offbeat comedy Every Which Way But Loose. The 70s also brought a new breed of directors, including Francis Ford Coppola with The Godfather, and Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets a year later. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg crashed onto the scene with the 1975 megahit Jaws and, of course, George Lucas made Star Wars. Not forgetting the three biggest soundtracks of the decade; A Star Is Born, Grease and Saturday Night Fever. It was the decade which saw director Steven Spielberg becoming Mr Hollywood after releasing a stack of hit movies, including three Indiana Jones flicks and the biggest box-office hit of the decade, E.T., as well as contributing to cult classics Gremlins and The Goonies. Science-fiction continued to be big news, with films like Back to the Future, Blade Runner, Aliens and The Terminator among the most enduring of the decade. Plus, the biggest selling soundtracks of the 80s were absolutely classics: Flashdance, Prince's Purple Rain and that immortal line of 'nobody puts baby in the corner,' followed by that lift, which, of course, comes from the number one soundtrack of the 80s: Dirty Dancing. James King's Pocket Guide To 90s Movies | 20230813 | 20240224 (R2) | James King curates a Pocket Guide to the Movies, revealing his key films from the 1990s - a decade when Disney was reborn with Pixar's Toy Story, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and, the pride of them all, The Lion King. You would have thought that it would be the biggest selling soundtrack of the 90s, but it was only third. Coming in second was James Cameron's epic romance Titanic, featuring the track you might have head before: My Heart Will Go On. At the top spot not just for the 90s but for all time is The Bodyguard. The hottest director for the decade was, of course, Quentin Tarantino, with blockbusters like Reservoir Dogs and the unforgettable Pulp Fiction under his belt in just a few years, as well as story and scripting contributions to cult classics Natural Born Killers and True Romance. Meanwhile, Tom Hanks had the decade of his life, picking up Oscars for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and later scoring a nomination for Saving Private Ryan. Few could have imagined that this dry piece of real estate would become the glittering movie capital of the world. In tonight's concert, a cast of over 80, including the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Mike Dixon, perform a unique cinematic concert from one of Europe's most popular movie locations, Malta, celebrating 100 years of tinsel-town in spectacular style. Six outstanding West End soloists, Louise Dearman (Wicked) Gloria Onitiri (Bodyguard) Rebecca Trehearn (Bad Cinderella) Trevor Dion Nicholas (Aladdin) Jesse Smith (Led Zeppelin Symphonic) and Michael Xavier (Roman Holiday) together with chorus, Dynamic Vocals, led by Ben Francis, take us from the Golden Age to the present day.
