Greene's novella was published the year after the film, The Third Man, was released, but formed the basis of Greene's screenplay. The Oscar-wining film, directed by Carol Reed, is now considered a masterpiece, and was chosen by the BFI as the best British film of the 20th century in 1999. Author: Graham Greene, 1904-91, is one of the most acclaimed and most popular writers of the 20th century. He won several awards for his work including the 1948 James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
