01Philharmonia Baroque All-mozart Programme20110103Petroc Trelawny introduces an all-Mozart concert recorded at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco featuring the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, one of America's finest period instrument ensembles. The concert opens with incidental music written for the play Thamos, King of Egypt, one of the composer's early forays into music for the theatre. The fortepiano supremo Robert Levin joins the orchestra for the innovative Piano Concerto in D minor and also plays the concerto movement only recently attributed to a seven-year old-Mozart. The programme concludes with Mozart's majestic final symphony, the 'Jupiter'. Nicholas McGegan conducts.

05Mozart, Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail20110107Petroc Trelawny introduces a complete performance of Mozart's 'Turkish' opera, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, K384, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Mozart wrote the Abduction from the Seraglio in 1781 just after he had moved to Vienna, a city that had been besieged by the Turkish armies less than 100 years before. Now with the threat from the Ottoman Empire a receding memory, Turkish settings and the spicy exotic sounds of Turkish military bands became all the rage for composers in Vienna and it was against this background that Mozart wrote his German language 'singspiel' for the city's Burgtheater.

It tells the story of a young nobleman Belmonte and his attempts to rescue his betrothed Konstanze and their servants Pedrillo and Blonde from the Palace of Pasha Selim and the clutches of the Pasha's henchman Osmin. However at the moment when Belmonte's plans go awry and the quartet are at the mercy of the Pasha the ruler's humanity and enlightenment shine through and the prisoners are set free.

When Tamino, a young prince, finds himself lost and pursued by a snake, he invokes the mercy of the gods, and faints. 08Music From Mozart's Last Years20110112Suzy Klein and Petroc Trelawny introduce music from Mozart's last years.

It's fair to say most people know at least something about Mozart's life, for instance that he was a child prodigy and died while writing his Requiem. But is there any fact about Mozart - man or music - you've always wondered about but never dared to ask? Maybe it's about the circumstances of that Requiem or Mozart's fabled skittish personality, or whether he really could write music straight onto the page, almost without thinking.

Well, this evening is your chance.

Dr Cliff Eisen who has been our music consultant on The Genius of Mozart season and is an internationally regarded authority on Mozart will be joining Petroc Trelawny and Suzy Klein on Performance on 3. You'll be able to ask Cliff Eisen your Mozart question live on air or you can email or text.
