An 18th-century teenager who wanted to fly in a balloon, a Victorian girl uncertain about the etiquette of cycling, a modern housewife bored with domesticity, and the lovelorn of all ages are among the numerous people who have turned for help to the anonymous counsellors in women's magazines since they were first published in 1693. Dr Cynthia White , a sociologist who has just published the first-ever history of women's magazines, presents an anthology of these letters together with the advice given in reply, and suggests some of the social factors which influenced the writers.
