In September 1939, nineteen year old Keith Douglas was studying English under the First World War poet, Edmund Blunden and was already a published poet himself.

Desperate for real war experience, he enlisted with enthusiasm and later, as a tank commander, fought in the Battle of Alamein.

In poet Owen Sheers' adaptation, Joseph Fiennes reads Douglas' diary, alongside some of the poems that came out of the crucible of battle, poems which capture unflinchingly the collision between man and machine.
