This Green Unpleasant Land

Mud throwing youngsters, overgrown bushes and joy riders burning out cars may not sound like the most serious problems of our time.

But for people in the countryside, who feel ever more at risk from crime and nuisance as the police struggle to provide a meaningful presence in rural areas, they can make their lives a misery.

So, in a unique two-year pilot scheme, the Avon and Somerset Constabulary have appointed eight civilians to patrol parishes, and act as the eyes and ears of the community.

Gerry Northam follows the rural wardens through their training and onto their beats to discover what difference they can make to the lives of country folk, to hear how they carried out a citizen's arrest, and what happened when they were called in to deal with the great Western Zoyland onion heist.
