Lord Ismay Born in India, he became a distinguished Army Staff Officer, right-hand man to Churchill in the war, assistant to Mount-batten in the Partition of India, Secretary-General to NATO. A pall-bearer at Churchill's funeral, he outlived his chief by only 10 months.
