A group of middle-class Russian holidaymakers spend a summer together, passing the time with affairs, intrigues and amateur dramatics, but eventually having to confront the hollowness of their lives.

Written in 1904 as a response to Chekov's `The Cherry Orchard', this adaptation by Nick Dear was first performed at the Royal National Theatre.
