John Moore 's Brensham Vil lage was read by Keith Banks in Story Time last year, but Portrait of Elmbury was in fact the first to be published in the Brensham trilogy, the third being The Blue Field. These books, appearing just after the war, were warmly appreciated by a public eager to be reminded of rural England as it was before the deluge.

John Moore himself described Portrait of Elmbury as the story of a market town in England's 'middle west it is also his own story and he emerges from it as a sensitive. humorous, kindly observer. 1: Through the Window
