Savannah Disaster

A portrait of Dr Jimmy Ratter, from Edinburgh, one of the first botanists to explore the tree savannah (or cerrado) of central Brazil. Over the last 40 years, more than half the savannah has been cleared for cattle and soya, and today it is significantly more threatened than its more famous neighbour, the Amazonian Rainforest. Now 70 years old, Jimmy Ratter remains at the forefront of the campaign to save what remains of one of the world's most important and endangered environments.
