Satire And The Sixties

John Bird considers the legacy of the satire boom of the 1960s.



On 22 August 1960, `Beyond the Fringe' opened with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller and Alan Bennett. It took Edinburgh by storm before transferring to the West End, and making way for Peter Cook to open his Establishment Club in Soho.

`Beyond the Fringe' was on Broadway, Private Eye lampooned the government of the day, and `That Was the Week That Was' began on TV. With contributions from Rory Bremner, Griff Rhys Jones, John O'farrell, Michael Frayn, Humphrey Carpenter and John Bassett.
