Mark Whitaker recalls the events surrounding the birth of the Royal British Legion.

The organisation grew out of an assortment of self-help groups set up by wounded soldiers returning from the trenches of the Great War, who found that they were not being cared for in the way they had been promised when they joined up. Originally rivals, they settled their differences and came together under the leadership of Field Marshal Earl Haig.
