Revelations

Ever since it was created by Alvin Ailey in 1960, the ballet Revelations has brought the audience to its feet, shouting for more.

The lecturer and writer on dance Thomas DeFrantz traces the story and background to the signature work of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, inspired by the powerful spirituals to which it is danced and by the black Baptist church congregations of Ailey's Texas childhood.

Forty-five years on the company is about to bring Revelations on a UK tour, and the artistic director Judith Jamison, the dancers and dance writer Clive Barnes, evoke its power and its blistering climax as the dancers and audience come together for the final section: 'Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham'.
