Starring Mark Addy and brought to radio by the award-winning writer Nick Perry, 'Referee' is that rare thing - a compelling drama set in the world of sport.
Geoff Keating is at the top of his profession.
He earns a generous salary as a professional football referee.
All is well until he is involved in a couple of high-profile and controversial incidents.
Publicly pilloried and feeling hung out to dry by the authorities, his anger and alienation precipitate a moment of madness when he accepts a bribe to influence a game.
Regaining his senses, Geoff determines to put it behind him and carry on.
He thinks he's got away with it...but then the calls begin.
The screw is turned tighter and tighter until finally Geoff breaks.
'Referee' is a fiction.
But it's not a docudrama or a bit of navel gazing for football obsessives.
It is a human drama about a man who does something stupid and is then sucked into a nightmare that he cannot escape.
