In anticipation of tonight's concert of Haydn's 'Orfeo ed Euridice', Paul Farley considers poetic treatments of the River Styx and the cadaverous figure of Charon, ferryman to the Underworld.

He travels to Merseyside to take two rather different kinds of ferry, in the company of poets Jeffrey Wainwright and Deryn Rees-Jones.

Together they explore poetry's fascination with the voyage to Hades and with the handful of mythical characters who've made the return journey.

Produced by Emma Harding.
