Passionate Encounters

A Selection Of Stories by Stefan Zweig.

Born in 1881, Stefan Zweig was of Austrian-Jewish origins.

A great humanitarian, liberal thinker and prolific writer, he fled Nazism in 1934 but took his own life in a double suicide pact with his wife in 1942, consumed with despair by the events unfolding in Germany.

Interested in psychoanalysis and deeply influenced by Freud, his stories and novellas recount intensely personal narratives that evoke the disintegrating world of Mittel-Europe in the early 20th century and have always attracted the interest of film-makers, including Max Ophuls, Stanley Kubrick and Andrew Birkin.
