Operation Pedro Pan

Lucy Ash finds out how, decades before the Elian Gonzalez custody battle, 14,000 Cuban children were separated from their families by the Cold War. As Castro took over, a CIA-inspired whispering campaign panicked their parents into sending them to the US alone, with the Pedro Pan programme providing flights and visas. Now they are at the heart of Cuban-American Miami.
