Saving the Thames Shearwater
Sarah Moore meets bird rescuer Jean Hains, who launches stricken birds off cliff tops. This is because when young Manx Shearwaters attempt to make their first flight from Wales to South America they can often be swept back inland. Once grounded, they can't take off again without help. But there are tens of thousands of these beautiful birds, and she saves maybe a hundred a year. So is she wasting her time?
