Sandy Burnett continues Radio 3's centenary tribute to the great oboist (1897-1988) with a wide range of BBC recordings, including concertos by Pergolesi and Eugene Goossens, Britten's Fantasy Quartet, the Sonatina by Malcolm Arnold, and some of the short character pieces and arrangements for which he was so well known. The programme also includes Goossens himself talking about his life and work, and tributes from oboists he did so much to inspire.

In two programmes, Gordon Stewart mines a rich seam of performances of Mendelssohn's music given in the 70s and 80s. The first programme includes the Octet (performed by the Chilingirian and Lindsay quartets), songs sung by April Cantelo, pianist John Ogdon playing some of the Preludes and Fugues, and the D minor Piano Trio played by the Beaux Arts.

Geoffrey Smith introduces a diverse selection of music from the BBC archive by Gilbert and Sullivan. When Georg Solti was appointed music director of the Royal Opera in 1961, he intended to turn it into `the best house in the world'. From this progressive and vital decade of Covent Garden's history came Solti's 1966 production of `Der Rosenkavalier' by Strauss.
