He develops a liking for purges and condemns his foes to death by writing poems to them.

Always putting himself first, Mao abandons his second wife and young family in the city of Changsha as military manoeuvres intensify.

His deadly foe is now Chiang Kai-shek.

This famous event which involved 80,000 people on foot was central to Mao's grasp for power.

Of course, events surrounding the march were often made up and passed into Chinese myth.

05 LASTThe Final Move20050624

Mao's rise in the late 1940s is unstoppable.

He has married his fourth wife, the infamous Madame Mao, and as Supreme Leader will address the crowds at Tiananmen Gate in a flat and spluttering voice!.
