By 1822 Louis Spohr had returned to Germany after several years of international travel, and immediately set about trying to secure a reputation as an operatic composer. He saw a real need not just for great German opera, but for a manifesto that German composers should follow in their quest for a truly distinctive national style. It's one of the astonishing coincidences of musical history that while Spohr toiled at these labours, a young boy by the name of Richard Wagner was living in the apartment next door. Donald Macleod tells the story of Spohr's emphatic commitment to the opera stage.
