Brian Walden recalls the final week of the 1970 general election campaign, when Ted Heath upset the odds by beating Harold Wilson.

The Labour government had a run of bad luck in that critical week - such as poor trade figures and England being knocked out of the World Cup by West Germany.

So unexpected was the scale of the swing, that the BBC results programme had to bring in a man with a paint-pot to extend their swingometer live on air.
