The oboist Evelyn Rothwell first met John Barbirolli in 1931.

She was 20 and he was audtioning her for a job.

By the end of the decade, he was principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra - the successor to Toscanini - and she was his wife.

John Barbirolli was principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1936 to 1943.

Lady Barbirolli remembers some of their friends and colleagues - superstars like Toscanini and Heifetz, and Hollywood greats like Charlie Chaplin and Danny Kaye.

Once war broke out, the Barbirollis were keen to return to Britain.

This proved difficult - and nearly fatal.
