The BBC Voices project has been collecting over the past six months interviews from more than 1000 men, women and children from the Shetland Islands to the Channel Islands, from the far west of Northern Ireland to inner city wastelands.

Its the BBC's language history project that will eventually find a home in the British Library.

What emerges from these hundreds of hours of recordings is a fascinating and encouraging picture of what we're like as a nation - from the schoolboys in Salford, with their aspirations and fears (they are worried that their home town will weigh against them in life - never say you're from Salford) and pride and self confidence; to the two Afro-Caribbean musicians in Cambridge who explain the subtle difference between cussing and swearing; to the group of second-generation Punjabi women in North Leeds who reflect with hilarity (but huge emotion) on the conflicting tugs of their cultural background and their Yorkshire birthright.
