In 1936, Fortune magazine in NYC commissioned journalists James Agee and Walker Evans to do a lifestyle article on tenant farmers in Alabama.
What the two delivered was an emotional and quite shocking portrait of an impoverished and near feudal existence - a portrait that Fortune found itself quite unable to print.
