Catherine Bott looks at the historical and liturgical context of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, including several musical settings of these very dark and desolate poems which are still an integral part of the Jewish and Christian faiths.

The programme includes contributions from Graham Knowles - The Dean of St Paul's, Rabbi YY Rubinstein and Cambridge scholar Kim Phillips, as well as readings from actor James Quinn.

The music includes settings of the Lamentations by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Antoine Brumel, Giovanni Palestrina and Jan Zelenka.
