Description

SBH:It's a Funny Business - The comedian talks about his early career. Interviewer: Mike Craig.

PRE:Didn't come from a show business family at all. Mother decided he had good voice so at age 5 or 6 he was entertaining World War I troops. How he and Jimmy Jewel were related. Played all variety houses - had to go to school in every town. Had no education. Idea of treat was when father took him to football. Father didn't want him to be in show business at all, was mother's idea. Ups and downs of his early career. Anecdotes about various nightmare experiences. Cousin's husband told him he'd be good as a black-faced singer - got him a week's work in Woolwich where he was an unexpected success. Led to him getting work in London. How he ended up working with Jimmy Jewel. Life was very kind to them.
