Colin Thomas's drama documentary is set in the steel town of Hughesovka, established in the Ukraine in the 1870s by Welsh capitalist John Hughes and initially mainly populated by Welsh miners and steelmen.
Played out to a documentary background of letters and journals written by real inhabitants of Hughesovka, the story follows a romance that develops between a young Welsh miner and a Ukrainian girl.
