The Heresy

John Spurling's play tells the story of Hypatia - known to history as the first female mathematician and philosopher - who was killed by a mob in AD415 following a power struggle between Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, and Orestes, the Prefect of Alexandria and a friend of Hypatia.

The play explores the conflict between early Christian orthodoxy and the less belligerent doctrines of neo-Platonism, and investigates the consequences of mixing politics and belief.

With Julia Ford (Hypatia), John Rowe (Orestes) and Robert Glenister (Cyril).

Directed by Richard Wortley.
