As we prepare to launch our 2007 competition, our BBC World Drama this week is the winner, in the English as a first language category, of the International Radio Playwriting Competition 2005. The competition attracted over eight hundred entries from around the world, with ten entries shortlisted.
The Hard Way, by Gino DiIorio, is set on an isolated Texan farm at the end of the nineteenth century, where Tyrus Cole makes his living as a horse trainer. When Dwight Foley turns up for advice on his horse, he is shocked to find Tyrus' physically disabled sister, Mary, living in a root cellar under the house. But all is not as it seems. Is Mary the victim of a cruel brother or has she chosen this life for herself?
Dwight finds himself strangely drawn to Mary but this relationship has disastrous consequences for all of them and tension mounts as Dwight learns about life, the hard way.
Barbara Barnes, Eric Loren and William Hope star, with music composed and performed by Simon Russell.
Directed by Rosalynd Ward.
