But he secretly prefers Berenice's sister Selene, and is plotting to desert the queen and use the marriage to seize the Egyptian throne, while the powerful backing of Rome threatens them all.

Penny Gore introduces another in Radio 3's year-long series of Handel operas. Written in London in 1713, it's a short piece by Handel's standards and follows the repulsive and somewhat inept Roman dictator, Silla.

Due to the fact that some of the music is missing from Handel's score, this performance has filled in the gaps by using material from other operatic works by Handel - who was known to be a great recycler of his own music.

  • 01Admeto, Admeto, Acts 1 And 220090521

Louise Fryer presents Acts 1 and 2 of Admeto, a work which holds a unique place among Handel's operas, as the last of them to be staged in his lifetime. This was to be the last production of them the last Handel opera production until 1920, and is considered by many to be the finest of the five works he wrote for the 'rival queens' - two star Italian sopranos who demanded equal billing.

The main roles are two very contrasting women who both love the hero, King Admeto of Thessaly. Comic relief is provided by the slow-witted but brave Hercules, who tries to rescue Admeto's wife from Hades, guarded by the three-headed hound Cerberus.

    01Alessandro, Alessandro - Acts 1 And 220090514

After he capture one of its cities, the Macedonian king becomes embroiled in a complicated love triangle with two captive princesses.

The composer used the rivalry between his original leading women - sopranos Faustina Bordoni and Francesca Cuzzoni - in his adaptation of the original material for the opera, giving them equal billing.

This version of the story of Richard I or Richard the Lionheart coincided with the coronation of George II - a stroke of good fortune for the astute composer, who revised the opera substantially as homage to the new king. The revised version emphasised the heroic and romantic aspects of George's great predecessor, dramatising his conquest of the island of Cyprus and his marriage to a beautiful Spanish princess.
