Jean Sibelius completed only one opera, despite being an excellent composer of vocal music.

The one-act `The Maiden in the Tower' was written at the request of the Helsinki Philharmonic Society and is based on a medieval Finnish tale about a young maiden imprisoned in a castle by a bullying bailiff.
