Did Gershwin Get It Wrong?

In `Porgy and Bess' Gershwin studied speech patterns and Tin Pan Alley jazz to compose melodic lines which he thought to be in the style of Negro spirituals or songs from slavery. But did his portrayal demean the black community which Porgy and Bess inhabit? Anthropologist Christopher Davis investigates.
