A Day In The Country

Broadcaster Julian Evans tells the story of a day driving in the country near Odessa with his Ukrainian wife, Natasha.

Finding their way between villages lost in prairies of wheat, they stumbled upon the abandoned ruin of what had once been a gorgeous merchant's house: the house at Vasilivka.

They talked to local people who told them some of the story of the family who built the house and their fortunes.

And it started to haunt them.

This is the story of the forgotten Ukraine, a culture submerged by the Soviet experience which doesn't have time to find itself anew.
