A tale of passion, jealousy and revenge set in the Border Country between England and Wales.Ann Goodman returns from living with her cousins in Wales to look after her sick mother across the border.

Her fiance, Gabriel, an English shepherd, gives her a diary so that she can keep an account for him of everyone she meets.

But Gabriel soon flies into a rage when he learns of Ann's encounters with the parson, and her father's master, the ill-tempered but charismatic Evan ap Evans.

Summer comes and the sheep shearing begins.

Evan ap Evans tells Ann he will find Gabriel and tell him there is nothing between them but Ann hears no news of it.

When her mother dies, her father tells her he's sending her back across the border to Wales.

It is there she learns about the meeting of Gabriel and the Master, and how they fought.

Gabriel is her sweetheart again and proposes marriage.

At the Pentredwr sheep trials Gabriel wins the cup and is triumphant.

But the mood changes when he discovers Ann and Evan talking in the cowshed, and a violent fight ensues.

Soon her father's failing health draws Ann back to the Border country, and the conclusion of her doomed love.
