Christmas Crackers

Phill Jupitus recalls the way that television and radio have celebrated Christmas Day over the last 70 years.

Christmas has always given broadcasters an excuse to throw the regular schedules out of the window and offer the audience something a little special.

One of the very first religious broadcasts was made on Christmas Day 1922 by the Rev John Mayo.

The first Royal Christmas message was broadcast on the Home and Empire services in 1932 - quite a technical feat for the time.
