Directed by Nadia Molinari
The drama tells the story of Holly, a fourteen year old girl, who is approached by Jay, a twenty year old man and begins a relationship with him. We see how Jay manipulates and isolates Holly from her family and friends and how the relationship turns into one of violence and sexual abuse involving other men. The story is told through the child's perspective: we see the distress it causes her; her increasing isolation and desperation and how her attempts to remove herself from the situation move her ever further into Jay's grip. The drama does lead to a point of resolution where Holly speaks to a support worker about the abuse and her parents and best friend discover what has been happening.
D.L.Weller has done extensive research with victims and their families and professionals working in child protection and safeguarding. Holding On To You, although fictional, is informed and inspired by these interviews. It explores a problem thought to affect tens of thousands of children, of all backgrounds, yet that still remains largely hidden and apparently unaddressed in many regions.
