Catherine Bott presents a programme of music and the texts written by the trobairitz, a small group of female troubadours.
Very little of their works has survived, mainly the poetry, and there is only one extant song with both the text and music written by Comtessa de Dia, who was one of the most celebrated of the trobairitz.
Catherine Bott explores some of the text settings and considers the differences between their music and poetry and that of the male troubadours.
During the programme, Catherine also meets the crime writer Sara Paretsky whose latest novel has taken inspiration from the works of the trobairitz.
Music in the programme includes recordings by Sinfonye, Hesperion XX and Sequentia.
