Martin Wainwright follows the trail of Yevgeny Zamyatin who spent time in Newcastle during the First World War building ice-breakers for the RUSSIAn navy.

His experiences gave rise to two surreal and satirical novellas and influenced his later Dystopian masterpiece 'We'.

A forerunner of Huxley and Orwell, on returning to the Soviet Union, sporting tweeds and smoking a pipe, Zamyatin was dubbed the ENGLISHman and died in exile in PARIS in 1937.
