Bbc Singers Concert For Basca20151115The BBC Singers conducted by James Morgan perform nine short pieces written recently by nine very different European composers. The texts range from the passionate and wordy, to one that sets just three very simple words. There's deep poignancy in a piece inspired by the final words of Edith Cavell, the nurse who was murdered by the Germans in the First World War, and then there are lighter moments with the iconic Alice in Wonderland being reworked for cyber-space.

The pieces were chosen following a Europe-wide call for scores organised by ECSA - the European Composer and Songwriter Association who hosted the event organised by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors.

Verity Sharp talks to each of the composers, all of whom were present at the performance.

Choral Music, By Judith Weir20150510The BBC Singers conducted by David Hill are joined by the Choristers of Temple Church Choir and members of Endymion to perform a selection of choral music by Judith Weir.

All the Ends of the Earth, for chorus, percussion and harp, was written for the BBC Singers as part of a Europe-wide radio broadcast on Millennium Day, 1 January 2000 celebrating the 1000-year old music of Perotin, on whose motet Viderent Omnes this composition is based.

Missa del Cid explores the relationship between religion and warfare. Weir compiled the text from the 13th-century Cantar del Mio Cid which takes place during the reconquest of Spain from the Moors, and imagines a Mass attended by the swashbuckling hero Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar and his troops. The resulting Mass text, which enfolds a partial telling of the Cid's story, is made up of extracts from Latin liturgy and the Cantar itself in its original Old Spanish

In Storm, The BBC Singers are joined by the Choristers of Temple Church Choir for a suite of short settings of words from Shakespeare's Tempest. Each of the five movements distills one of the concepts of the play.

The New Babylon20140316New Babylon' is Shostakovich's first film score, and is full of the composer's characteristically witty - and occasionally dark - musical style. The score was written quickly in 1928/9 and is tightly tied to the images in the film, at times violent, and at times lyrical and passionate. Its vivid and masterfully orchestrated music includes quotations from 'La Marseillaise' and ebullient can-cans in the style of Offenbach.

After its completion the score was largely ignored in the West for many years before resurfacing in 2001. This performance by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, recorded at Glasgow's City Halls in 2006, accompanied a screening of the film as part of that year's Merchant City Festival and was conducted by Ilan Volkov.
