Chris Hawkins Presents Elton John Recorded Live At The Hammersmith Odeon In 197420101225Elton John recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1974 features on the 6 Music Classic Concert presented by Chris Hawkins, and includes many of his best known songs.

As always when Elton John appears on stage, it's a very special occasion and a show which few artists in the world can equal. This concert is no exception, except that this was, in fact the last recorded concert featuring Nigel Olssen (drums) and Dee Murray (bass), who supported Elton throughout his early career. The show being presented in two halves, beginning, unusually with a couple of songs performed, by Elton John solo at the piano, later being joined by the rest of the group for classic renditions of tracks like Bennie And The Jets, Honky Cat, and Your Song.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah20101120Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, recorded at Glasgow's Indian Summer Festival in 2007, feature on this week's Classic Concert on 6 Music.

The band formed in 2004 after meeting at college in Connecticut, and released their eponymous debut album the following year.

Their initial work was lauded on influential music website Pitchfork, and both David Byrne and David Bowie were spotted at their early gigs; no surprise, since both the band's music, and vocalist Alec Ounsworth's nasal yodelling, give a respectful nod to Talking Heads and its frontman.

They played this festival set while promoting their second album 'Some Loud Thunder' which had come out earlier that year.

The programme is presented by Chris Hawkins.

Marillion formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire in 1979 as Silmarillion, after J.R.R. Tolkien's book of the same name. They played their first gig at Berkhamsted Civic Centre on 1 March 1980, and quickly developed beyond their initial influences of Queen, Pink Floyd, Van der Graaf Generator, Rush and, (most notably), early Genesis to craft a sound of their own.

This concert was recorded with third vocalist Steve Hogarth, who succeeded charismatic original vocalist Fish, (and transient member Dave Lloyd), to continue the group's premiere status amongst neo-prog aficionados.

Once renowned for their quirky, trip hop indie tunes, Moloko have at last received the acclaim that they deserve with their recent voyage into glittery disco-house. Hits such as Sing It Back and The Time Is Now have put them firmly back on the map in a land sorely lacking in glitz and glam. Paul Weller20091129Paul Weller from Guilfest 2005 feature on Live At Two presented by Chris Hawkins, included in this set are tracks taken from his solo albums, along with a few classic Jam tracks thrown in for good measure.

As the lead singer of The Jam, Paul Weller was the frontman of one of Britain's most popular bands in the late '70s, influencing many UK bands, from his mod revival contemporaries to the Smiths in the '80s and Blur in the '90s. During the final days of The Jam, PAUL developed a fascination with Motown and soul, which led him to form The Style Council in 1983. As The Style Council's career progressed, Paul Weller became infatuated with jazz-pop and house music, which led to the defection of many of his once-devoted fans. But it wasn't long before he was winning audiences back as a solo artist and by the mid-'90s he had released three successful albums. Since then PAUL has produced more excellent work like Stanley Road and Heliocentric and his brand new album, As Is Now, has already provided him with a couple of hit singles. You can hear tracks from that new album plus old favourites in this fine concert performance.

Pulp20101113Pulp, recorded by 6 Music at Rotherham's Auto Festival in 2002, feature in this week's Classic Concert.

It's amazing to think that Pulp were formed 32 years ago by 15 year old Jarvis Cocker, who did it because he just wanted to be in a band. The band signed to Island Records in 1993, and the following year the release of the Mercury nominated album 'His And Hers' saw their career take off.

Pulp established themselves as one of the UK's most innovative and exciting bands, peerless in the quality of their song-writing and their live performance.

This concert features the line up of Jarvis Cocker, Nick Banks, Candida Doyle, Richard Hawley and Mark Webber, along with bassist Steve Mackay who also organised the festival! This performance was the band's last until their recently announced refromation.

The set includes the classics 'Do You Remember The First Time?', 'Lip Gloss', 'Sorted For Es and Whizz' and 'Babies', and is introduced by Vicki Blight.

A while later they came to London where they built up a big following and became recognised as one of Britain's leading progressive heavy outfits. They're unique on the British scene today as they are the only progressive outfit to feature a female lead vocalist. She is Maggie Bell, who has been called 'the best female singer in Britain'- and this is certainly true in the soul field.

This is Stone The Crows live at the Paris Theatre in London. Introduced by John Peel.

The Datsuns20090802The Datsuns recorded live 2002 at the Nottingham Boat House, are cranking up the volume on Live At Two.

Chris Hawkins introduces a set that includes Harmonic Generator, and In Love. A strangely talented foursome, they all assumed the same surname, as they saw themselves as 'brothers in rock.' Fronted by Dolf De Datsun, with Phil and Christian Datsun on guitars, and Matt Datsun on drums, they won their local radio station's Battle of the Bands two years in a row, prompting them to set up their own label. This enabled them to get their music to the masses - and it worked.

In 2001, deciding they should take on the world, Dolf, Phil, Christian and Matt headed to London. They were immediately elevated to God-like status by the UK music press, thanks to a support slot on tour with The White Stripes. They won NME's Best Live Act Award and signed to a major label. Their meteoric rise was complete upon release of their self-titled debut album in 2003. Here they are with a great set recorded at Nottingham's Boat Club.

The Kinks20090517In this week's Live At Two, Chris Hawkins presents the unique, eccentric but quintessentially British band, The Kinks.

Captured at the Rainbow Theatre in 1977, the concert features classic songs, Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, Lola, and a few surprises.

The band were known for their squabbling off stage, as well as on stage with flying cymbals included, but at the height of their success they were a force to be reckoned with.

The Stranglers remain among the most enigmatic of all the major punk rock bands. They're either loved or loathed, no band's fans are more loyal and no band's critics more vitriolic, yet The Stranglers have remained one of the greatest punk rock 'n' roll bands in Britain. This performance features songs from their 1984 album 'Aural Sculpture' and a few of the now classic Stranglers numbers, without which... well it just wouldn't be a Stranglers gig.

Todd Rundgren-Interactive', (or 'TR-I'), was a new concept which allowed the audience to influence how they listened to Todd's work. In September 1994 he released 'No World Order', an album made up of four hours of musical fragments each being four to eight seconds long. The idea was that, with the music on an interactive CD-ROM, you could play them in an almost infinite amount of ways. The normal CD contained ten songs in six variations.

With tracks from that album and many others, here is Todd Rundgren recorded by the BBC at The Forum, London, on 7 October 1994.
