2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the world's longest running orchestral music show 'Friday Night is Music Night', and this year's 2Day celebrates the orchestra and its instruments, culminating in a Friday Night Is Music Night Gala concert at the Hackney Empire in London. Featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra, the evening will bring together a host of Radio 2 presenters and special guest performers including Gary Barlow, Elaine Paige , Mick Hucknall, Jamie Cullum and Clare Teal- plus Tony Blackburn as you've never seen him before and a grand finale from the Radio 2 All star presenters choir. Ken champions the woodwind section of the orchestra, and attempts to play the most basic of woodwind instruments; the recorder. Clare Teal is joined by members of the BBC Big Band and Alison Moyet at London's Hackney Empire to look at how woodwind instruments are used in jazz improvisation. Legendary clarinet player Acker Bilk talks to Ken about the love for his instrument and Prog rock supremo and flautist Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull chats about the role of the flute in popular music.

Steve is joined by comedian Tim Minchin, who performs 'When I Grow Up' from his hit musical Matilda on Elton John's piano in the Radio 2 green room, Nigel Ogden from The Organist Entertains will build and play a virtual organ capable of replicating the sound of any church or cathedral organ in the UK, keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman demonstrates his love of performing nursery rhymes and contemporary pop songs in the style of classical composers and jazz pianist Jamie Cullum illustrates how he composes his songs.

Simon moves to the back of the orchestra and celebrates all things percussion. Dame Evelyn Glennie introduces us to some more unusual percussion instruments, Tony Blackburn takes a crash course on the xylophone ready for his big moment in this evening's concert and listeners request their favourite songs featuring percussion instruments.

He'll also be talking to legendary drummer, Steve White, about his career with The Style Council and Paul Weller, his love of the drums and what got him into starting to learn.

Gary Barlow headlines a show that amazes, delights, surprises and thrills!

Among the artists taking part are Sinead O'Connor, Jamie Cullum, Elaine Paige, Clare Teal and Mick Hucknall, all backed by the extraordinary 60 piece BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Mike Dixon.

The orchestra also blast their way through exciting classics from Shostakovich to Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein to the epic film music of John Williams.

This 2Day Friday Night special also features the network's musical award winners including Radio 2 Young Folk duo Gregory Russell and Ciaron Algar, Radio 2 Young Choristers Louisa Stirland and Isaac Waddington,and Young Brass award winner Josiah Walters.

A record number of Radio 2 stars host this never to be repeated event. Among them Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine, Anneka Rice, Paul Gambaccini, Vanessa Feltz, Alex Lester, Richard Allinson, Janice Long and Bob Harris. And watch out for a surprise performance from Tony Blackburn, as you have never seen him before.
