Baritone Michael Volle And Pianist Helmut Deutsch | 20190808 | German baritone Michael Volle presents a programme of high drama and poignancy accompanied by Helmut Deutsch, on piano. Schubert's setting of 'Der Taucher' (The Diver) tells the tragic tale of King's challenge to retrieve a gold goblet from the water to win his daughter's hand in marriage. Cuarteto Casals | 20190806 | The Barcelona-based Cuarteto Casals perform three highly contrasting quartets; 'The Bird' from Haydn's set of six quartets from Opus 33 which was considered to be ground-breaking and crucial to the development of the string quartet form, written 'in a new and special way' according to the composer. Bartok's intense third quartet which makes use of extended technique to dramatic effect and end with Beethoven's expansive quartet from his 'Razumovsky' set commissioned by the Russian ambassador in Vienna at the time and performed live from the Queen's Hall. Doric Quartet And Brett Dean | 20190820 | Live from the Queens Hall in Edinburgh the Doric String Quartet perform Haydn's Joke' quartet, a piece that caused Clara Schumann to laugh out loud. Then follows the European premiere of Hidden Agendas' by Australian composer Brett Dean, written specifically for the Doric String Quartet and inspired by the extreme personalities in the current political climate'. After the interval Brett Dean joins the ensemble to perform what was to be Brahms swan song, his second String Quintet Op. 111. After the first rehearsals Brahms' surgeon friend Theodor Billroth wrote to him saying I have often reflected on the subject of what happiness is for humanity. Maxim Emelyanychev And Sco Players | 20190812 | Russian pianist and conductor Maxim Emelyanychev takes up his post as Principal Conductor of the SCO in September 2019 and in this EIF debut shows his credentials as an instrumentalist when he joins forces with some section principals and former members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra for a spot of romantic chamber music. Composer Ernst von Dohnanyi, was also a formidable pianist described as 'a poet who just happened to play the piano.' His sextet was his last major work, scored with almost orchestral richness for winds, strings and piano. Talents of individual SCO and former SCO players are shown off too in Brahms' mellow and rather melancholic Trio for clarinet, cello and piano as well as Schumann's Adagio and Allegro for horn and piano which was a particular favourite of Clara's and foreshadows Schumann's show-stopping Konzertstück for four horns. Meta4 String Quartet | 20190813 | The Finnish quartet Meta4 make their debut at the EIF with music from Finland and Germany. Terra Memoria is written by Finland's foremost living composer Kaija Saariaho and is her second piece for string quartet. It is dedicated to 'those departed' and explores our memories of people who have left us, some of which change over time and some which 'remain clear flashes and which we can relive.' Fanny Mendelssohn's only quartet is a both lyrical and passionate work, demonstrating an exceptional talent not fully realised in her lifetime and the clear inspiration from the towering figure of Beethoven. Meta4 complete their programme with Schumann's third quartet, written in a burst of creativity for the genre in 1842. The concert is presented by Donald Macleod. Radio 3 New Generation Artists At The Festival | 20190823 | One of the leading chamber ensembles in Europe and formerly BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, the Amatis Trio join forces in a special collaboration with two new talents on this prestigious scheme: Ukrainian violinist Aleksey Semenenko and the viola player Eivind Ringstad from Norway. Franck's piano quintet is a work of passionate intensity and drama while Dvorak's sunny and melodic style marries Czech folk tunes with a hint of his American' themes to come. Steven Osborne | 20190805 | Scottish-born pianist Steven Osborne performs a selection of meditations from Messiaen's towering masterwork of the 20th century for solo piano. It was written for his wife Yvonne Loriod, a fine pianist who invited Steven Osborne to study the work with her in Paris in 1999 after hearing him play other works by her late husband.
