05Budapest Festival Orchestra Soloists20150814Live from the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, the Budapest Festival Orchestra Soloists perform Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes, originally written for his fellow alumni of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. They also play Poulenc's sparking Sextet and a youthful Piano Quintet by their fellow countryman Bartok.

10Colin Currie20150821Live from the Queen's Hall, Colin Currie and Friends perform an exhilarating recital including a new work by Steve Reich, dedicated to Scottish-born Colin Currie, the Quartet for two vibraphones and two pianos. The recital also includes Adams's work for two pianos, Hallelujah Junction, and a musical response to poetry by Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin. The concert concludes with Bartok's masterpiece for two pianos and percussion.

11Sol Gabetta20150824The outstanding Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta joins forces with the French pianist Bertrand Chamayou in a lyrical and Romantic programme of Chopin, Beethoven and Mendelssohn from the Edinburgh International Festival. Chopin's friend, the cellist Franchomme, persuaded and helped him to write the Grand Duo based on tunes from Meyerbeer's opera Robert le diable. It was an unusual collaboration where Chopin devised the overall plan and piano part and Franchomme wrote the cello part. Franchomme later became the dedicatee for Chopin's only Cello Sonata.

12St Lawrence Quartet20150825The Canadian St Lawrence Quartet perform John Adams's First Quartet, which the composer wrote for them after hearing them perform another of his works. They have since become his favoured string quartet and enjoy a close relationship with the composer. The quartet also perform a short work based on a Biblical text by the Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov and finish their Edinburgh International Festival recital with the first of two masterworks for string quartet by Saint-Sa뀀ns which deserves to be better known.
