0144 Scotland Street20120430

A dramatisation of Alexander McCall Smith's acclaimed series based on the residents of a fictitious tenement building in a real Edinburgh New Town street, inspired by Maupin's Tales of The City.

Anthropologist Domenica MacDonald observes the lives of her neighbours and the neighbourhood in Edinburgh's New Town. Pat, a new young tenant, arrives at 44 Scotland Street to flat share with Bruce. Bruce is a surveyor with more of an eye for the ladies than a sound property. We're introduced to five-year-old Bertie, who is controlled by his pretentious and intellectual mother Irene - he's learning the saxophone, speaks Italian, and is extremely knowledgeable about many subjects. And then there's Matthew, setting up the Something Special Gallery with little knowledge of artists or paintings!

With its multiple-occupancy flats, Scotland Street is an interesting corner of the New Town, verging on the Bohemian, where haute bourgeoisie rubs shoulders with students and the more colourful members of the intelligentsia.

One of McCall Smith's particular talents is his ability to portray archetypes without resorting to stereotype or cliche. In McCall Smith's hands such characters retain charm and novelty, simultaneously arousing both mirth and empathy, 44 Scotland Street is vintage McCall Smith.

01A Small Town Murder, Series 420120423

By Scott Cherry

In the first episode of 'A Small Town Murder' by Scott Cherry: it looks like Family Liaison Officer, Jackie Hartwell, might be offered some paid leave after the tragic events of a recent case.

Jackie Hartwell (played by Meera Syal) is a West Midlands Family Liaison Officer who solves cases by winning the trust of those caught up in the nightmare of serious crime and murder.

Police guidelines: The primary function of an FLO is that of an investigator. In performing this role, the officer will support the family, but will also gather relevant information and intelligence.

Jackie is a serving copper, not a social worker, functioning as part of an active team of investigating CID officers. But working in liaison enables her to get closer to the people involved in the crime, closer to the raw emotions, than the rest of her colleagues - allowing her to investigate in a way they can't, as she combines empathy and intuition with the keen observation of a clever detective.

In Series 4 of 'A Small Town Murder', Jackie is asked to be FLO to the parents of a young man whose murdered body is found floating in the local canal. But as she tries to support the family and solve the murder, Jackie finds herself becoming more and more distracted by the tragic consequences of a previous case.

01Not A Love Story20120507

By Shelagh Stephenson

When Maddie Cook is violently raped by someone she thought was friend, she is urged by the Police to prosecute her attacker, with decidedly mixed results

Madeleine Cook is 24 and, for the last nine months, she's been living back home with her parents whilst she temps and tries to pay off her student loan. Her boyfriend Nick is still living in London, and they see each other whenever they can.

Madeleine still has old friends from school days and a clutch of new ones. They meet up in local pubs most weekends. Like everywhere now the bars are open late, the drinks are cheap and usually most of them get anything between tipsy and very drunk. The sort of normal weekend behaviour you find in every town and city, but it being a small, relatively middle class place, it's less violent and not particularly aggressive.

One Friday night Madeleine leaves the pub and walks home along the seafront in the company of Danny, a boy of her own age, whom she's known for few months, through other friends. On the way and seemingly out of the blue, he jumps on her. At first she thinks it's a bad joke, but in fact he rapes her. We know it happens, because we're with her at the time.

Stunned, shocked, she calls her friend Louise, and together they go to a rape crisis centre. The next day, Louise persuades her to go to the police.

It sets in motion a whole chain of events which question our attitudes towards rape, sexuality and sexual assault.

Sisters Noemi, Ester and Ruth are the last remnants of a noble family in decline.

Grazia Deledda's powerful story of love, poverty, honour and retribution set in the rugged landscape of 1900's Sardinia. Dramatised by Linda Marshall Griffiths from a translation by Martha King.

Efix is a loyal servant to the Pintor sisters Noemi, Ester and Ruth, the last remnants of a noble family in decline, dishonoured by a sister, Lia, who ran away and driven to poverty by the sudden and mysterious death of their father. Only Efix knows the truth. When he discovers that the sisters have received a telegram from Lia's son, the ghosts of the past emerge.

Grazia Deledda wrote thirty-three novels and many books of short stories, almost all set in Sardinia. In 1926, ten years before her death, she became the second woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. She wrote Reeds in the Wind in 1913.

Deledda's characteristic love of the natural landscape and fascination with the folk culture of the island underpins the novel. A dreamlike quality envelops the story where past and present merge. It is a novel full of imagery, of smells, of colour, of light and shade. The religious festivals, the music and the growing love between Giacinto and Grixenda contrast with Efix's frightening visions of the past and the repressed and austere existence of the Pintor sisters in their dilapidated home- a prison of their own making that separates them from the flow of life.

Sisters Noemi, Ester and Ruth are the last remnants of a noble family in decline.

A dramatisation of Alexander McCall Smith's acclaimed series based on the residents of a fictitious tenement building in a real Edinburgh New Town street, inspired by Maupin's Tales of The City. Pat's on a desperate search for a lost masterpiece, and Dr Fairbairn just needs peace.

04A Small Town Murder, Series 420120426

By Scott Cherry

In the fourth episode of 'A Small Town Murder' by Scott Cherry: Family Liaison Officer, Jackie Hartwell, is faced with giving Sue and Carl some frustrating news.

Sir Richard Penwerris (Richard Jonson), mired in debt, wishes to bequeath it to the National Trust, much to the fury of his wife, Lady Helen (Lia Williams) who plans to drag the estate, kicking and screaming, into the 20th century. Matters are complicated further by the sudden emergence of an heir to the estate, Rafe Penwerris (Henry Hadden-Paton), whom his father believed to have died in the war. A clash of Titans ensues - with only one winner.
